WHAT: daily UI challenge for UI exercising
WHY: I want to be more familiar with the UX/UI tools
HOW: a UI design prompt is generated by Daily UI, find a UI example that I like and try to replicate that design, and have a self-reflection for each challenge
Today's UI Challenge: App Icon
Design an app icon. What best represents the brand or product? Or is it incredibly unique? Does it look great at a distance and does it stand out when put on your home screen alongside other apps?
Tools and resources that I used for this challenge
Design Tools: Sketch, photoshop
UI example
Source: Amazon Shopping App Icon. I made a screenshot of the app icon.
My process
I picked the Amazon shopping app because it is a well-recognized icon, and I like using their services 😄. My first step is to create a replicate, then I can try some modifications and see where it goes.
Try something new
Because I receive lots of shopping boxes, it is easier for me to just to make the icons by mimicking the boxes that I received (tapes on top and bottom, brown tapes, prime on the box, and black tapes with prime print)
More thoughts...
The main element of this app icon is the curved arrow like a smile. It implies happiness and satisfaction. Looking at my modifications, the strong element still stays out is the curved arrow. Thus they are recognized as belonging to Amazon. That makes me realize that even if the icon is reduced only to the curved arrow, people will have no problem recognizing it. That's how powerful a well-established brand can be.
